The Pain & NeuroRecovery Group at the University Clinic for Neurorehabilitation, Hammel Neurocenter is dedicated to advancing our understanding of pain mechanisms, neural recovery, and multimodal outcomes after neurological injury.

Our research focuses on acquired and early-life neurological disorders affecting the central nervous system, including spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and cerebral palsy. While these conditions form the core of our work, we also collaborate with national and international partners on related conditions, including Guillain-Barré syndrome with the Danish Pain Research Center at Aarhus University, and complex regional pain syndrome with the Movement Disorder and Pain Research Center at Rigshospitalet Glostrup and the Spinal Cord Injury Center at Balgrist University Hospital, University of Zurich.

The lab brings together experimental, translational, and clinical research. Our work spans psychophysics, computational modelling, clinical neurophysiology, clinical trials, and clinical data science approaches. Using methods such as evoked potentials, motor unit number estimation, pupillometry, and sympathetic skin responses, we investigate pain mechanisms and neurological recovery. In parallel, we apply clinical data science approaches to identify predictors and confounders of recovery trajectories.

The group also maintains the Hammel Pain Physiology Lab (“Smertefysiologisk Laboratorium”), an embedded hospital-based laboratory that provides easy, barrier-free access for patients and enables both experimental pain research and clinical trials.
