General Neurology Research Unit

The General Neurology Research Unit (GNRU) brings together the department’s research activities and advances knowledge for the benefit of patients with neurological disorders. The unit fosters an interdisciplinary research environment where clinical practice, research, and professional development mutually reinforce one another.

The GNRU works closely with clinicians, researchers, leaders, and external partners, including universities and industry collaborators. The unit provides a framework for developing new research projects and strengthening research competencies within the field of General Neurology.

Our research is driven by clinical needs and guided by one overarching goal: to generate knowledge that makes a tangible difference for people with neurological disorders.

We conduct research in close collaboration with clinical practice, where patients’ needs and everyday challenges shape our projects. Our work includes the development of diagnostics, treatment, prevention, nursing care, and rehabilitation.

Examples include partnerships with Aarhus University Hospital and Regional Hospital Gødstrup, as well as research groups and academic institutions in Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Our academic research spans a broad range of interdisciplinary projects aimed at improving neurological care and patient journeys.

Current research areas include:

• Exercise medicine in neurological disorders, including multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease
• Sleep and neurological disorders
• Data culture and data practices

New research areas are continuously developed based on emerging clinical challenges, including polyneuropathy and case-based studies.

The GNRU collaborates with pharmaceutical and medical technology companies on clinical studies involving pharmaceuticals and medical devices. The aim is to develop new knowledge and innovative solutions that benefit patients, healthcare professionals, and society as a whole.

Current industry-sponsored research includes clinical studies in migraine, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis. Activities are overseen by a steering committee responsible for evaluating and prioritising projects. Day-to-day operations are coordinated by a manager who ensures high-quality study conduct in close collaboration with interdisciplinary project staff.
